Temporary Markings

Temporary pavement markings, as described in the 2001 MMUTCD, are those that may be used until the earliest date when it is practical and possible to install pavement markings that meet the full MMUTCD standards for pavement markings.

  • Paint; Waterborne and Regular Dry
  • Temporary removable tape white, yellow & black
  • Temporary raised pavement markers
    
    
• Paint; Waterborne & Regular Dry
  • Paint may or may not require removal
  • Effective at locations where removal scarring is not a major concern
  • May be practical to consider where staging sequence is to remain in place for a significant period of time
  • Ideal and most cost effective when placed at locations where pavement is to be covered or removed
  • Pay item is Type NR Paint
    
    
• Temporary Removable Tape
• Pay item is Type R
• Ideal for temporary tapers, 4’ dashes, or covering durable markings with black removable tape.
• For locations where pavement is to stay in place or on brand new surfaces where pavement scarring associated with removal is a concern
• Will not adhere to surfaces with curing compound
• Subject to seasonal limits and will not adhere to damp or wet surfaces
  
  
• Temporary Removable Tape Characteristics
• Adhere to surface and last until the end of the staging sequence
• Apply without the use of primer
• Peel easily at the end of the staging sequence
  
  
• Temporary raised pavement markers. TRPM’s
• Can only be used as a supplement to an existing temporary line
• Effective along tapers as a line supplement at crossovers where extra emphasis is important
• Needs to be an understanding that there will be some failure and on asphalt surfaces will sink in
